Every mission has a starting point. For First Responders Foundation, that beginning is Luna.

Luna is a 4-year-old mixed breed rescue who is now officially the first dog to enter our Service Dog Training Program. She was adopted through our partnership with Big Dog Ranch Rescue, an organization dedicated to saving dogs and giving them a second chance. That partnership allows us to identify and rescue dogs with the temperament and potential to become service and therapy companions for first responders.

From the moment she began her training, Luna showed the qualities we look for in a future service dog: calm temperament, intelligence, attentiveness, and a strong desire to bond with people. At four years old, she brings maturity and steadiness — two traits that are essential when preparing to support a first responder navigating stress or trauma.

Her training journey includes:

• Advanced obedience and focus work
• Public access training
• Task-based skills designed to provide grounding and emotional support
• Exposure to real-world environments to build confidence and reliability

Service dog training is not rushed. It is structured, intentional, and built on trust. Each day Luna is developing the skills that will allow her to become more than a companion — she will become a steady, dependable partner to someone who has dedicated their life to serving others.

Luna’s journey represents the heart of our mission: rescuing dogs from shelters, providing professional training, and placing them free of charge with first responders who need support beyond the call.
